This image comes from the French 1st Edition of Linschoten's Itinerario. The images was engraved by De Bry and used in his Petits Voyages. The image is beautifully engraved with cartouches, a compass rose and a depiction of the Island. The Portuguese spice fleet - on which Linschoten sailed - is pictured anchoring at the Island. Ascension was an important stop over on the return from the Indes for water and food supplies. Sea birds, flying fish and a sea monster are depicted on the image.
