Ceremony ~ Buddha Meet Rock is the only album released by the Japanese psychedelic rock group People, arriving in 1971 via Teichiku Records. The record uniquely fuses traditional Buddhist chants with experimental rock textures, producing a sound that is simultaneously meditative and hallucinatory. The album begins with an interpretation of David Axelrod’s “Holy Thursday,” setting the stage for an immersive journey through spiritual and musical exploration. The ensemble is guided by composers Yusuke Hoguchi and Naoki Tachikawa, and features guitarist Kimio Mizutani, recognised for his work with Outkast and Masahiko Satoh’s Sound Breakers.
