‘New Scottish and international writing’

Gutter is Scotland’s leading literary magazine, publishing new fiction, essays and poetry, twice a year (February and August, for those keeping track). Each issue aims to showcase work that surprises, challenges, and enlivens readers, all by emerging and established writers from Scotland and beyond. Expect to find ambitious, diverse, and international voices expressing the importance of the written word.

Guest edited by Zain Rishi, this latest issue reflects on literature’s inherent intertextuality, encouraging reading between the lines. Weaving together musings on grief and memory within an ever-changing world, inside Ali Millar chases loose ends in order to defer death; Louise Gray attempts to fill the void left by her mother’s passing with food; Alice Mah draws parallels between the phenomenon of ‘ring rust’—a decline in a boxer’s performance following time away from the ring—and the fight against climate collapse; and Lindsay Johnston grapples with the continuation of routine activities in the face of escalating wildfires. Alongside the usual selection of fiction, poetry and reviews, you’ll also find a conversation with debut novelist Rebecca Ferrier, whose recent release ‘The Salt Bind’ weaves historical fiction with a touch of fantasy.

On the Journal
At Work With Colin Begg: ‘We aim to be a magazine in the original, literal sense of a storehouse, offering readers a twice-yearly playlist of the best new fiction and poetry from emerging and established writers from Scotland and beyond.’
