First published in Germany, this comprehensive study of battleships and battle-cruisers and their development is the result of two decades of research and is considered a "must have" for naval enthusiasts.

Descriptions of every ship whether they were taken into service, remained uncompleted, or only reached the drawing board stage, are given in detail. These cover the ships of Great Britain, United States, Germany, Brazil, Spain Japan, Italy, Russia/Soviet Union, Argentina, Austro-Hungary, France, Turkey, Chile, Greece, Netherlands, Yugoslavia, Portugal, and Poland. The characteristic features of every vessel is described in great detail and much of the information was hitherto unknown or unavailable.

The 922 drawings are extremely detailed and accurate and add to the overall reference value of the book which records the rise and fall of the great capital ships of two World Wars. Full of clearly broken down tables of armaments, armor values, and quite a few well done line drawings. There is a nice bit of data on incomplete projects such as the Montana class or the remainder of the 8-8 Fleet for the IJN.
