Dennis Brown’s Deep Down celebrates its 50th anniversary with its first-ever official reissue - a long-awaited return of one of his most treasured and elusive albums, originally released in 1976 on Niney the Observer’s imprint. Remastered using analogue machines, this edition restores the warmth, grit, and vitality that define the golden age of roots reggae.
Pressed on a special ultra GOLD vinyl, this anniversary release celebrates the deep tones and pure soul that made Dennis Brown a true alternative to Bob Marley and The Wailers. While Marley carried reggae’s revolutionary fire, Brown brought a more romantic and spiritual touch - a sound that would help define what the world now knows as Lover’s Rock.
By the time Deep Down appeared, Dennis Brown had parted ways with Trojan and was working with producer Winston “Niney the Observer” Holness, a partnership that produced some of the greatest roots reggae ever recorded. Capturing Brown in full creative bloom, the album blends devotional roots messages, soulful vocals, and early hints of dancehall energy. His voice moves effortlessly through the ska-paced ‘Travelling Man’, the funk-edged ‘Open the Gate’, and the gospel-tinged ‘God Bless Our Soul’, while ‘Tribulation’ and’ Shame’ reveal the emotional depth that made him one of reggae’s most beloved singers.
Never released worldwide, the album became one of his most sought-after and collectible recordings.
