This series will help paint a more realistic picture of the first Christmas, and not the picture perfect nativity scene we often see under our tree. There was some real stress around the events of the first Christmas for all those involved. But Jesus willingly chose to come into this troubled world, so that through Him, this troubled world might be saved.
_______
“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you. He is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:11 (NIRV)
Mary, Did They Know?
Scripture: Luke 1:26-33 & Matthew 1:18-23, The Angel Visits Mary and Joseph
Mary was young and unmarried. The angel appeared to Mary and explained all about the baby that would be born to her. But Mary would have been looked down upon for being unmarried and pregnant. Did the people in Mary’s life understand the amazing gift God had given Mary? Did Mary even fully understand? Mary knew one thing though, she was going to trust God, no matter what.
Objective: Kids will learn “Mary trusted God, even when those around her made fun of her.”
Not So Silent Night
Scripture: Luke 2:1-7, The Birth of Jesus
Jesus was not born into a palace, or a fancy hospital, or even a house. He was born in a stable where the animals were fed. His first baby bed was a manger. Jesus was never spared the chaos of this troubled world. From the moment he was born he began to experience the challenges and difficulties we all face in life. He chose to do this, to show us that He is a Savior who understands any pain or problem we face.
Objective: Kids will learn “Jesus understands any pain I feel.”
Joy to the Worn
Scripture: Luke 2:8-20, Shepherds and Angels
Shepherds were not seen as important or highly regarded people in Jesus’ day. They were dirty, uneducated, and probably worn out from a hard life of living outside. Outside in the elements and outside of normal society. It was to these “less than” people that God chose to make the first announcement that the Savior of the world had been born.
Objective: Kids will learn “Jesus came to be a Savior for everyone.”
Away From the Danger
Scripture: Matthew 2:13-21, Family Flees to Egypt
Throughout Jesus’ time on earth, there were people who wanted to take his life. Even as a small child, his family was forced to flee their home so that Jesus’ life could be spared. However, Jesus knew the danger He would face when He chose to leave Heaven and come to earth. Jesus chose to walk into danger and face death, so that you and I could be saved.
Objective: Kids will learn “Jesus came to lay down his life for me.”
